About this Event
Learn to lead sexuality education classes, staff training, and parent workshops.
April 9-11, 2025. Registration is limited to 32 participants, so register today to secure a spot.
Sexuality Educators can get 8.75 CEs toward AASECT certification (see FAQ for details).
Increase your skill and comfort level when addressing sexuality with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
Following the training, participants will have the skills and three curricula (with corresponding, customizable slide decks), handouts, and teaching tools so they can lead:
- Sexuality education classes for people with I/DD
- Staff training on how to address sexuality one-on-one with people with I/DD
- Parent workshops on "How to Talk with your Kids about Sexuality."
Don't miss this opportunity to get the training and support you need to make a difference in the lives of people with I/DD.
The goal of this training is to train an employee to become your agency's or school's staff/parent trainer and sexuality educator. This person will become more confident and comfortable leading sexuality education classes for people with I/DD as well as training staff and parents either one-on-one or in groups so they can promote the sexual health of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. You will leave with new knowledge and skills and three curricula with handouts and teaching tools so you can begin as soon as you return to work following the training.
*You will receive a certificate of attendance or, if you pass an assessment following the training, a certificate of completion. This certificate does not make you a certified sexuality educator and trainer.
Here's what our participants say
"This training conquered a challenging topic area that is so crucial and much needed to allow our clients to lead autonomous, independent, and fulfilling lives. I feel well prepared to take this on in my workplace, providing training to our direct care staff and participants directly."
"This was the most well-taught course of instruction and materials I've attended in years. It is totally current and relevant and exceeded my expectations 100%. The quality of any energy experience in this course was of such high caliber that I would recommend it to anyone serving the DD population."
"I learned a lot of different presentation techniques as well as different ways to keep the flow of training going. I liked absolutely everything about the training. Honestly, it was the best training that I have ever attended. I loved the content and presentation. I can't wait to implement."
"I learned that I have the ability to train co-workers, parents, and clients about this topic. I liked that it was comfortable. The training was very informative. The curriculum is clear, easy to use, and thorough. When I return to work, I am going to discuss this training with my supervisor and implement it ASAP."
Training Description
When it comes to talking about sexuality, people with disabilities are often excluded, almost as if they are incapable of having sexual thoughts, feelings, and needs. In reality, they, too, are sexual beings who need the information and skills to make healthy decisions about sexuality. Though agencies and schools that work with people with I/DD know that sexuality issues need to be addressed, they don't necessarily feel comfortable or competent enough to do so. This workshop will give you the curriculum, tools, and skills to teach sexuality education classes and lead staff training and parent workshops.
Objectives
As a result of this training, you will be able to:
- Describe how to help people with disabilities become sexual self-advocates.
- Identify our own values and attitudes and how those impact your ability and effectiveness in teaching this topic.
- Explore the qualities of a good sexuality educator and trainer.
- Create elevator speeches to get buy-in for implementation.
- Explain what makes it difficult for staff and parents to talk about sexuality with consumers and discuss solutions to those barriers.
- List ways to teach this topic with other agency staff, parents, and people with disabilities.
- Demonstrate effective training techniques to use with staff, parents, and people with disabilities.

FAQs
Do I need a copy of the Sexuality Education for People with Developmental Disabilities curriculum to take this training?
Yes, you need a copy to use at the training. It is included in the tuition for the training. If you or your agency already own one, bring it, and we will reduce the tuition cost to $945. Choose the ticket that reflects whether you purchase with or without the curriculum. If you buy a curriculum with your ticket, you'll receive it via USPS or UPS about one week before the training (along with the other training materials). People who purchase a ticket without buying the Sexuality Education for People with Developmental Disabilities curriculum will receive the other training materials USPS or UPS.
Note: If you live outside the United States, there might be an additional charge to ship the materials to you. We will give you a quote when you register.
What is a certificate training?
This is an assessment-based training. If you attend the entire three days and pass an online assessment (at the end of the training), we will issue you a certificate of completion versus a certificate of attendance. A certificate training is not to be confused with becoming certified as a sexuality educator. Only AASECT can certify sexuality educators. You must be present for all but 2 hours of this live training to be eligible for a certificate of completion.
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Contact: Helaine Iris 603.399-5777 [email protected]
