About this Event
Join us as Professor Judith Mossman, Professor Emerita of Classics at Coventry University and Honorary Professor at Warwick University, delivers the second talk of our 2025-26 speaker series.
About the talk: This illustrated talk examines Euripides’ Bacchae from the perspective of Dionysiac religion and the perception that Dionysus’ devotees come to resemble him as part of their religious experience. In particular, Pentheus comes to be assimilated visually to the appearance of the god in his role as the Stranger from the East – but his resistance to Dionysus means that he cannot achieve true likeness to the god and he is destroyed. On the other hand, by the end of the play, Dionysus’ divinity has been made terribly manifest, and he takes his place on high, where a Euripidean god should be.
