Beatrix Campbell: Secrets and Silence Join acclaimed journalist Beatrix Campbell for a thought-provoking discussion as she unveils the shocking revelations from her latest book.
About this Event

Join acclaimed journalist Beatrix Campbell as she reveals untold truths and hidden government agendas in her latest book, Secrets and Silence: Uncovering the Legacy of the Cleveland Child Sex Abuse Case.

In 1987, the Cleveland Child Sex Abuse scandal shook the UK as 121 children were removed from their parents care due to allegations of sexual abuse made by two paediatricians at the Middlesbrough Hospital. The scandal was a defining moment in child safety legislation. However, it was not the scandal we were led to believe it was. Beatrix Campbell’s Secrets and Silence: Uncovering the Legacy of the Cleveland Child Sex Abuse Case, empowers unheard voices of those who were embroiled in the scandal and shares their stories in their own words.

Beatrix will be in conversation with Liz Kelly, British professor and director of the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit, London Metropolitan University.

Beatrix Campbell is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster, writer, and influential feminist. She is the author of Wigan Pier Revisited, End of Equality and many others. She writes about politics, crime, community, gender, child abuse and sexual politics and has co-authored two plays with Judith Jones. Campbell was active in the Women’s Liberation Movement as well as campaigning in the equal rights pay strike and occupation in 1981. Her many awards include the Cheltenham Festival Literary Prize, Fawcett Prize and several honorary doctorates for her work on community, crime and child welfare, as well as an OBE for services to equality.

Elizabeth A. Kelly CBE is a British professor and director of the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit, London Metropolitan University, former head of the (now defunct) Women's National Commission, and co-chair of the End Violence Against Women Coalition. Liz is a professor of sexualised violence and holds the Roddick Chair on Violence Against Women; she also holds a PhD in Sociology and a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Politics.
