MEET AT THE CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND AT 11amJoin Friends of Stourbridge Common and Cambridge City Council Biodiversity and Tree Teams for this ancient tradition to mark the boundaries of our Common.
Before paper maps, commoners would make an annual circuit of the boundaries of their common land, to show children where the boundaries lay, to pass on folk memory.
Join us for a guided walk as we beat willow switches against the Common's edges - as is the tradition! Along the way, we will stop to hear about:
o The history of enclosures in Cambridge
o Coldham's Brook and the Great Chalk Stream Project
o Black Poplar trees
o Cattle, grazing and their importance for biodiversity
o Foraging
After the walk/from 12:30, in the play area, there will be
o A creative art activity for children
o a display with information about Stourbridge Common
o bring your own picnic.
NO NEED TO REGISTER
What to expect:
o A leisurely (child’s pace) walk around the edges of Stourbridge Common
o Pauses to gather and hear a short spoken talks, aimed at children
o Willow switches will be provided
o Uneven grassy paths, can be muddy
