Bats! Walk and Words

Did you know that there are 17 bat species in the UK, and eight species so far were observed commuting and foraging in the arboretum at the Museum in the Park in Stroud, Gloucestershire?
Join us for an evening walk and find out more about our incredible bats with local expert Ivi Szaboova of Gloucestershire Bat Group. As well as tracking bats, we’ll stop along the way to read some poetry and prose inspired by bats as rich material to encourage our own writing.
Meeting at sundown, we will take an educational and enjoyable walk through the park. We’ll use bat detectors to track and identify the flying mammals and – hopefully - will spot some flying. Species that might put in an appearance are common and soprano pipistrelle; brown long-eared bat, Daubenton's bat, lesser horseshoe, Myotis, noctule, and serotine.
You may need warm clothing; you’ll definitely need suitable footwear and a torch is essential.
No dogs, please.
NOTE: if it is raining on 18th September (bats don’t fly when it rains), we have a back up option of rescheduling this walk to the following Sunday, 21st September, 7pm - 9pm.
Meeting point: Museum in the Park (in front of the building), 7pm.
Route accessibility: The walk itself is very short and suitable for most abilities as we mostly observe bats at the lake. From the museum we set out through the arboretum to the lake and do a circular loop back up to the museum. Mostly on paths (if wheelchair access/low mobility access is needed, a grassy slope can be avoided).
Parking/ toilets: Leisure Centre car park (toilets at the leisure centre or Tesco during opening hours).
