Barton Art Galleries is thrilled to welcome the remarkable work of Gabe Duggan in their exhibition “Certain Mobilities”. Join us to explore installations that balance tension and vulnerability through innovative textile strategies, technology, and materials.
🎭 About the Exhibition:
The installations, constructed in three-dimensional space through tension and repetition, range from intimate to significant in scale, depending on material choice and context. These works primarily survive in the datasphere, including WAS HERE (2022), RECOHERE (2021), EITHERWAY (2020), and no one knows (extent in N.Y. since 2020), which utilize DSM Dyneema®, a ballistic synthetic polymer, to endure varying climates and seasons.
Gabe Duggan’s work explores binary systems, highlighting the interplay between opposing forces by situating grey areas in a state of balanced tension. Through the innovative use of textile strategies, technology, and materials, Duggan examines the social, political, and historical dimensions of power. By adopting roles as both creator and observer—image, image-builder, and viewer—they navigate spaces where agency is simultaneously lost and reclaimed.
Recent works, VISKUBIT (2023) and violence/consent (2024), abandon media specificity entirely, using the body as a subtractive technology upon the earth’s surface. These works leave marks—intended or unintended—on the land, existing in spaces described as "off-grid" while remaining visible at scales surveillable by satellite. Evoking ideas of desire paths and meditation labyrinths, these pieces exist only through use and are eventually erased by neglect.
By laboring over the construction of inherently vulnerable systems, Gabe Duggan emphasizes impermanence and precarity, challenging perceptions of functionality in the world and in ourselves.
