Barricades 2024: A Les Mis Convention

Barricades is an online convention dedicated to Victor Hugo’s seminal work Les Misérables and its influence. From the book itself to the stage musical and every adaptation in between, Les Misérables has had a powerful and lasting impact on the world.

Barricades is a volunteer-run, online-only event having its third annual convention July 12-14, 2024. It will include academic and fan tracks featuring panels on history, literature, adaptations, and even the fandom itself, which has endured from the release of the novel in 1862 to the present day.

A limited number of full scholarships to the con are available. If the cost of the ticket would be a financial burden—for example, because you are a student or disabled or the exchange rate to your local currency is steep—you can email us at [email protected] to request a scholarship. You do not need to explain your circumstances; just put your name on the list.

We will release a batch of scholarship funds every month from the start of regular registration until the con. Each month we will also email anyone we didn’t have funds for and let them know where they stand in the queue.

Scholarships are donation-funded. There is an option in the registration form to purchase a ticket for yourself and also fund a scholarship for someone else. You can also donate directly to the scholarship fund through the registration form.

Any unrequested scholarship funds will be donated after the con to our 2024 charity, Black & Pink National.

Barricades: A Les Mis Convention is, at its core, an exploration of the themes set forth by Hugo in his work. As such, proceeds from the event will support our charity, Black & Pink. Black & Pink National is a Pr*son abolitionist organization dedicated to abolishing the criminal punishment system and liberating LGBTQIA2S+ people and people living with HIV/AIDS who are affected by that system through advocacy, support, and organizing. Les Misérables is a study in the difference individual people can make on the lives of others and it is our goal to continue this legacy.

The Fans of Colour Zoom Room is a safer space for meetups and discussion. If you are a fan of colour and would like a ticket to the Zoom Room, just add the ticket to your registration.

You can also sign up in your registration to be an exhibitor in our virtual Artists’ Alley—a special set of Discord channels hosting chat, virtual ‘tables,’ and a directory of exhibitors’ work. If you would like to be a participating artist, add the Artists’ Alley ticket to your registration.

(The con is all-ages; by registering for the Artist' Alley you confirm your agreement to keep convention spaces on Zoom and Discord suitable for minors (with the exception of sessions clearly agreed in advance with the convention committee, and marked as 18+ only) by not sharing your NSFW art in the convention Discord, adding an (18+) warning to any links to NSFW art so people can opt out of viewing it, and ensuring that any links you share in the Discord do not auto-embed NSFW images as thumbnails.)

Certain program items, such as games and workshops, may have limited attendance. Tickets to these items will be available as zero-cost add-ons on a first-come, first-served basis. We will announce when any such tickets become available on the website and our social media, and we’ll send an email notice to all already-registered attendees—register early to make sure you get the announcements!
