Vilborg Bjarkadóttir myndlistarkona, kennari og þjóðfræðingur leiðir smiðju fyrir krakka þar sem gægst er inn í torfbæinn með hjálp ímyndunaraflsins.Það er svo skrýtið að hugsa til þess að í gamla daga bjuggu allir á Íslandi í torfhúsum. Torfbær er gamaldags töfrandi hús, gert úr mold, torfi og grjóti. Svona bæir voru algengir frá landnámi og fram á 19.–20. öld, áður en stein- og timburhús tóku yfir. Í dag eru torfbæir orðnir menningarminjar og virka eins og gluggi inn í fortíðina. Það er því ótrúlega gaman að fara í smá tímaflakk og hugsa um hvernig lífið manns væri ef maður byggi í torfbæ, án ofna og aðal hitinn kæmi frá líkömum fólksins í baðstofunni, eða kúnni í fjósinu á hæðinni fyrir neðan, eins og sums staðar var. Hvað gerist þegar við sköpum okkar eigin torfbæ með því að fara í smá tímaflakk, þar sem við sjáum fyrir okkur þykka torfveggi, fallega torfhleðslu og gamaldags hlóðir þar sem eldurinn kraumar?
Í smiðjunni veltum við fyrir okkur hvernig við getum búið til sameiginlega torfhúsabyggð. Hvert barn finnur sér sína leið til að skapa persónulegt torfhús. En að sama skapi felur leikurinn í sér að hugsa og vinna saman sem hópur, þar sem börnin finna leiðir til að láta húsin tala saman. Hver er munurinn á einu húsi og mörgum húsum? Hvað gerist þegar inn í ímynduðum húsum verða til íbúar, nágrannar, sögur og álfar?
Smiðjan þjálfar félagslega hugsun um það hvernig við sköpum gott samfélag þar sem öllum líður vel og það er pláss fyrir alla og allskonar sjálfsmyndir.
Allt efni fyrir smiðjuna verður á staðnum, það þarf bara að mæta!

Turf Houses and Time Travellers
Event for Children: the visual artist, teacher and ethnologist Vilborg Bjarkadóttir, hosts a workshop for kids where they glimpse into the turf house with the help of their imagination.
It is so strange to think that back in the old days, everybody in Iceland lived in turf houses. A turf house is a charming, old-timey house, made from soil, turf and rocks. Such houses were common from the time of early settlement all the way to the 19th and 20th centuries, before stone and timber houses took over. Today, turf houses have become a cultural heritage and act as a window to our past. That is why it is so incredibly fun to go on a little time-travel adventure and imagine what your life would be like if you lived in a turf house, without any radiators and most of the heat came from the people living in the "baðstofa", the main dwelling room, or from the cow in the cowshed on the floor below, as was the case in some places. What happens when we create our own turf house by going on a little time-travel journey, where we imagine thick walls of turf, beautifully constructed, and an old-timey firepit where the fire is crackling?
In the workshop, we will consider how we can create our communal turf house settlement. Each child finds their own way to make their personal turf house. But at the same time, the play involves planning and playing together as a group, where the children find ways to bring the houses into conversation with one another. What is the difference between one house and many houses? What happens when, within these imagined houses, inhabitants, neighbours, stories and elves come alive?
The workshop develops social thinking about how we can create a good society where everyone feels happy and there is space for all and all types of self-identities.
All material needed for the workshop will be available at the location, you only need to show up!
The event will be in Icelandic.
There is no admission fee for children under 18 years of age. A museum ticket is valid for adults at the event. Please note that an admission ticket is equivalent to an annual pass to the museum.
