Competition Overview
Competitors will rotate through four activities, testing their coffee skills and collecting points along the way. The competitor who accumulates the highest score will win the regional competition.
The regional winner will receive a regional winning prize valued at over $1,000 and receive a ticket to compete in the Barista Brawl National Final in Melbourne on the 18th of February 2026, with flights and accommodation covered plus a Grand Final winning prize valued over $7,000!
5:00 PM – Competitor arrival and briefing
5:30 PM – Competition begins
Event Format
20 competitors will split into 5 groups, 4 competitors will rotates to complete 4 station of different discipline. Each competitor will have 8 minutes to complete each station.
The judges and station managers will evaluate your results and score.
1. Pour It
Baristas will roll the spinning wheel to determine the pattern and alternative milk for their pour. They will steam and split a double jug of milk, then pour two lattes for the judges to assess balance & symmetry, contrast, and overall execution of the design. Competitors are allowed to bring their own jugs.
2. Assess It
Baristas will taste two batch-brewed coffees and use the provided coffee description word cloud to identify the origin, farm name, varietal, processing method, and flavour notes.
3. Smell It
Baristas will identify aromas from the Scentible kit. Points are awarded for correct answers, with a bonus for getting all correct.
4. Eyeball It
Baristas will manually dose 20 g of coffee by eye into two portafilters, then manually extract both espressos to a 40 g yield (also measured by eye) into shot glasses. These will be judged on accuracy and consistency.
