About this Event
We hope to see both Brooklynites and friends from other boroughs at Liz’s Book Bar on Thursday, April 16th. Prithi Kanakamedala will talk through the major findings of her 2024 book Brooklynites, which follows four families living in free Black communities of 19th-century Brooklyn. We’ll learn about Prithi’s research in local archival collections at the Center for Brooklyn History and Weeksville Heritage Center and how she turned digitized directories and newspaper morgue clippings into an engaging book. Liz’s owner, Maura Cheeks, will welcome us to the space and provide us with a brief history of her book bar, which has emerged as a thriving Black-owned business in 21st-century Brooklyn. While you’re hanging with us, be sure to buy a copy of Brooklynites to support the work of third spaces, like Liz’s, and archival researchers, like Prithi.
