A series of talks focusing on Barbary corsairs and English privateers, and on the experience of Devon sailors as both perpetrators and victims. Across four talks spanning 1550 to 1816, the programme follows Devon mariners from profit to peril: the Dartmouth capture of the Madre de Deus and its prize wealth; Spanish Inquisition testimonies from Devon men captured at sea; the rise of Barbary corsair raiding, captivity, and ransom; and finally Pellew’s bombardment of Algiers. Together, these episodes connect local lives to conflict, showing how war, commerce, faith, and diplomacy shaped Devon’s maritime world over two and a half centuries.
