Set in 1980 East Germany, Christian Petzold’s Barbara, winner of Best Director at Berlin Film Festival, follows a brilliant young doctor (Nina Hoss) punished for requesting an exit visa and exiled to a rural pediatric hospital. Planning her escape to the West, she keeps colleagues at a distance, especially the observant lead physician (Ronald Zehrfeld), who is hiding a secret of his own.
