Join North Hills Progressives and Red, Wine, and Blue to honor Banned Books Week 2025 at Ruckus Cafe! This year's theme for Banned Books Week is “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” Current efforts to ban books and information held in schools, libraries, archives, and bookstores are a truth close to fiction – namely, the depiction of extreme censorship by an oppressive regime in George Orwell’s cautionary and prescient tale 1984. The Banned Books Week 2025 theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.
We'll kick off the event with a presentation on book banning by Claire Crytzer, the Regional Organizer of Red Wine & Blue for the Greater Pittsburgh Area.
Then, we break out the bingo cards! Banned Books Bingo is a fun and engaging way to bring awareness to the issues of censorship and book banning. Banned Books Bingo works similarly to regular bingo, but as the books are called, the accompanying reason for why the books have been banned is also read.
Tickets provide attendees brunch, mimosas, crafts, and bingo! Every kid goes home with a book, in addition to our wonderful prizes!
Tickets can be purchased at https://secure.actblue.com/donate/bingobrunch2025.
Tickets are limited to 65 attendees, and we sell out every year, so please don't wait.
