“Recent Sorrows” (1984) will screen Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 7pm at the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive.
Presented as part of BAMPFA’s acquisition of Jerry Ross Barrish’s three feature films: Dan’s Motel (1981), Recent Sorrows (1984), and Shuttlecock (1989), and the documentary "Plastic Man", this retrospective series, “Jerry Ross Barrish: A Life in Film and Art,” celebrates Barrish’s singular vision across independent cinema and found-object sculpture.
In “Recent Sorrows”, a random meeting between two recently heartbroken men, one straight, one gay, turns fateful. The film is Barrish’s offbeat deconstruction of modern love and toxic relationships, set in an early 1980s San Francisco where AIDS had yet to fully enter public discourse.
