“Shuttlecock” (1989) will screen Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 4:30pm at the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive.Presented as part of BAMPFA’s acquisition of Jerry Ross Barrish’s three feature films, Dan’s Motel (1981), Recent Sorrows (1984), Shuttlecock (1989), and the documentary "Plastic Man," this retrospective series, “Jerry Ross Barrish: A Life in Film and Art,” celebrates Barrish’s singular vision across independent cinema and found-object sculpture.
In "Shuttlecock", an introverted painter embraces her solitude amidst the coastal Pacifica fog, until an outgoing comedian and his girlfriend move in next door.
The film’s measured pace and natural dialogue marks it as refreshingly unlike anything from 1980s Hollywood, so it’s little surprise it had more admirers in Europe at the time of it's festival run.
