Balsam poplar bud season is here 🌲Join us on Sunday, April 19 for a hands-on plant walk and salve-making workshop centered around one of the boreal forest’s most powerful anti-inflammatory medicinal plants.
We’ll begin at 1:00 PM with a relaxed plant walk at Waxwing Commons Ecological Farmstead, where you will learn how to identify balsam poplar and harvest buds responsibly. The buds we gather will come from trees that have been felled on the property for safety, giving us the opportunity to harvest without impacting living trees.
At 2:00 PM, we’ll wrap up the outdoor portion and make our way to The Commons Makers Co-op at Timmins Square, just a short drive away.
From 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, we’ll move into the hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to turn balsam poplar buds into a traditional anti-inflammatory herbal salve.
Each participant will make and take home their own salve and receive a workbook so you can recreate the process at home.
This workshop is relaxed and community-focused. It’s a chance to spend time on the land, learn a seasonal skill, and work with one of the most abundant medicinal plants in our region.
