Three-Week Intensive Dance Curriculum: Waltz, Foxtrot, and Tango
About this Event

Note: This curriculum is designed for new dancers with no prior partner dance experience. It focuses on foundational steps, posture, and basic partnering skills.

Week 1: Waltz

  • Topic 1:
    • Introduction to Ballroom Dancing: Basic etiquette, posture, and frame.
    • The Waltz: Basic step, rise and fall, and musical phrasing.
    • Practice with mirrors or a partner.
  • Topic 2:
    • The Waltz: Forward and backward walks, side steps, and turns.
    • Combining steps into simple patterns.
    • Practice with mirrors or a partner.
  • Topic 3:
    • The Waltz: More complex patterns, including the box step and natural turn.
    • Partnering skills: Leading and following techniques.
    • Practice with a partner.

Week 2: Foxtrot

  • Topic 1:
    • The Foxtrot: Basic step, slow and quick steps.
    • Musical phrasing and timing.
    • Practice with mirrors or a partner.
  • Topic 2:
    • The Foxtrot: Forward and backward walks, side steps, and turns.
    • Combining steps into simple patterns.
    • Practice with mirrors or a partner.
  • Topic 3:
    • The Foxtrot: More complex patterns, including the closed position and open position changes.
    • Partnering skills: Leading and following techniques.
    • Practice with a partner.

Week 3: Tango

  • Topic 1:
    • The Tango: Basic step, the eight-count basic.
    • Posture, frame, and the tango walk.
    • Practice with mirrors or a partner.
  • Topic 2:
    • The Tango: Forward and backward walks, side steps, and turns.
    • Combining steps into simple patterns.
    • Practice with mirrors or a partner.
  • Topic 3:
    • The Tango: More complex patterns, including the cross-system and back-cross.
    • Partnering skills: Leading and following techniques, embrace and connection.
    • Practice with a partner.

Additional Tips:

  • Consistent Practice: Practice daily, even if it's just for a short time.
  • Watch Professional Dancers: Study videos of professional dancers to learn proper technique and style.
  • Attend Group Classes: Join group classes to learn from other students and get feedback from instructors.
  • Hire a Private Instructor: Consider hiring a private instructor for personalized guidance and faster progress.
