Que se cache-t-il sous nos pieds ? Après des siècles d’urbanisation, il est légitime de s’interroger sur la façon dont les espaces de la ville se sont constitués, et plus particulièrement comment ces derniers ont muté sur le plan de la verticalité. Cet atelier vise à explorer les sols urbains dont la composition permet de retracer les couches historiques du Montréal d’hier à aujourd’hui.
Dans ce contexte, Ballets Résiduels est un projet de recherche en art et en design qui propose d’explorer la composition des sols du Champ des Possibles, un ancien site industriel montréalais situé en plein cœur du quartier du Mile-End. Grâce à des « instruments sensoriels participatifs», cette intervention artistique permettra aux participants de découvrir les compositions résiduelles des sols urbains post-industriels et de discuter des enjeux sociaux, matériels et environnementaux de ce lieu.
Les participants auront l’occasion de manipuler des instruments artistiques et seront invités à explorer différentes zones du site. Ces instruments permettront d’appréhender la composition des sols par des stimulations sensorielles (sonores, visuelles et olfactives). De plus, les dispositifs permettront de collecter des résidus qui seront ensuite analysés avec les participants. Cette approche vise à découvrir l’organisation résiduelle souterraine du Champ des Possibles et à réfléchir aux défis environnementaux en milieu urbain.
À la fin de l’atelier, les participants seront encouragés à dialoguer et à réfléchir sur les enjeux écologiques des sols post-industriels en ville. Le 7 septembre, l’atelier sera suivi du vernissage de l’exposition Perte-de-Signal au Centre d’Artiste Perte-de-Signal, situé au Complexe de Gaspé, à quelques pas du Champ des Possibles. What lies beneath our feet? After centuries of urbanization, it is legitimate to question how city spaces have been formed, and more specifically, how they have evolved in terms of verticality. This workshop aims to explore urban soils, whose composition allows us to trace the historical layers of Montreal from past to present.
In this context, Ballets Résiduels is an art and design research project that proposes to explore the soil composition of the Champ des Possibles, a former industrial site in the heart of the Mile-End neighborhood in Montreal. Using "participatory sensory instruments," this artistic intervention will enable participants to discover the residual compositions of post-industrial urban soils and discuss the social, material, and environmental issues of this place.
Participants will have the opportunity to handle artistic instruments and will be invited to explore different areas of the site. These instruments will allow them to understand the soil composition through sensory stimulations (auditory, visual, and olfactory). Additionally, the devices will collect residues, which will then be analyzed with the participants. This approach aims to uncover the underground residual organization of the Champ des Possibles and to reflect on environmental challenges in urban areas.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be encouraged to discuss and reflect on the ecological issues of post-industrial urban soils. On September 7, the workshop will be followed by the opening of the Perte-de-Signal exhibition at the Perte-de-Signal Artist Center, located in the Gaspé Complex, a few steps from the Champ des Possibles.
