June 15th: Folklore Pt. 1
Info: In this class we will learn Afro-Cuban folkoric music! We will learn basic Lucumí (Cuban-Yoruba) songs and percussion (Batá) concepts. This music was first brought to Cuban via the transatlantic slave trade and preserved via mutual aid societies called cabildos, then later through both spiritual practice and ethnological institutions.

Info: In this class we will get moving and learn basic Lucumí (Cuban-Yoruba) dance concepts and expression and how they fit with the music we covered in the music class.

June 28th: Popular Dances Pt. 1
Info: Learn the basics of Cuba's two most storied dance styles: Danzón and Chachachá. Founded in the late 1800's Danzón is Cuba's national dance form and the one of the first publicly recognized forms of Cuban dance and music. Founded in the 1960's as an fusion of the Danzón and Son Montuno, Chachachá is one of Cuba's most influential and internationally recognized musical genres.

June 28th: Popular Dances Pt. 2
Info: Learn the heart of Cuba's popular dance tradition: Son Cubano. Developed in the late 1800's/early 1900's, Cuban Son has remained the foundation of modern Cuban dance and the transcultural global phenomena known as "Salsa." Cuban Son's elegance, as well as variety of tempos makes this dance a versatile, simple, and a guaranteed source of joy for experiencing the flavor of Cuban music. We will learn the traditional concepts associated with this dance and apply it to partner work.
