Bagbazar Walks - on death anniversary of Swami VivekanandaSaturday, July 4, 2026
3:45pm to 7:30pm
Starting place : Nivedita Museum, 16A Ma Saradamoni Sarani, Kolkata 700003. Guests are requested to report at this meeting point latest by 3:45pm. The tour will start from Nivedita Museum at 4pm, with a visit to Nivedita Museum.
Ending point : We have decided to end this tour at this historical location. At Basu Bati. This is significant because Rabindranath Tagore had led a mass Rakhi Utsav (tying of rakhis) to promote Hindu-Muslim unity from this house in protest against the 1905 partition of Bengal. It was Lord Curzon who had passed the controversial partition plan of Bengal, which was officially announced to be combined with Assam to fragment the region, on July 5.
Bagbazar is deeply intertwined with the life and legacy of Swami Vivekananda (Swamiji) and the Ramakrishna Order. It served as a vital sanctuary and operational hub for Swamiji upon his return to India, making it one of the most significant neighbourhoods in the history of the Ramakrishna Mission. Swamiji left his mortal body at the age of 39 on July 4, 1902.
