About this Event
LTC Charity Adams was the first Black woman to be commissioned as an officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) during World War II. She later became the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (Six Triple Eight), the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during the war. Under her leadership, the battalion efficiently cleared a massive backlog of mail, ensuring troops received long-overdue letters and packages.
Born in North Carolina, Adams had ties to Columbia, SC, where she attended Booker T. Washington High School before pursuing higher education at Wilberforce University. Her legacy continues to inspire, and her story is now being brought to life in the film "The Six Triple Eight," directed by Tyler Perry and starring Kerry Washington. The movie highlights the battalion’s remarkable achievements and the barriers they broke during WWII.
