A CONCERT OF GENRE-DEFYING REPERTOIRE AND INSPIRING COLLABORATIONSCollaboration and creativity are at the centre of what it means to be human and make great art.
Melodious Thunk is a collaboration with developing musicians from NSW and SA to break down the barriers between genres in this celebration of the symphonic wind ensemble.
Featuring performances by and in collaboration with Adelaide Youth Orchestras Symphonic Winds and Killarney Heights High School (NSW), AWO plays classic works by David Maslanka, Clifton Williams, Brian Hogg, and Leonard Bernstein as we traverse the colourful history of the US band repertoire - inspired by the sacred to the profane, across genres - classical to jazz, blues, and musical theatre.
The lines blur in David Biedenbender's Melodious Thunk with "big, fat thunks...interspersed with pointy, clunky, bluesy blips" which hints at what is to come in our epic finale.
Katahj Copley's DOPE is a gumbo of all the music that inspires and influences Katahj Copley from Thundercat to Kendrick Lamar to Miles Davis to Hiatus Kaiyote and more. When trying to reconcile the symphonic band and his own taste in music, Omar Thomas asked Katahj Copley “Why do you make a barrier between those ideals?” and thus DOPE was born.
