Since their last performance at Brudenell Social Club in 2022, Leeds based jazz-folk fusion band Awen Ensemble have stepped up their profile on the UK music scene hugely. In mid-2023, they signed to the London jazz label New Soil and released their debut single for them in the autumn, the double A-side "She Moves Through The Fair/Over The Lake". A beautiful slice of folk meets jazz music that got them a live session on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM. The legendary DJ/radio presenter instantly became a fan and further supported the single with plays on his weekly BBC 6 Music show. Also in 2023, the band appeared at various UK summer festivals, including Green Man where they filmed a live video for the Chai Wallahs stage (check the video on this page).
Awen, meaning ‘poetic inspiration’ in Welsh, outlines the intention of their music to explore folkloric heritage, landscape and the human mind, inspiring audiences to reflect on and connect with these subjects. Playing both vocal led and instrumental work, the outfit take inspiration from modal tradition, spiritual jazz, and folk music found across the globe, creating compositions that are melodically focused and groove driven. Featuring spoken word, shimmering instrumentation and a Celtic mystique, Awen Ensemble bring a unique offering to the jazz table.
Finally in April 2024, they release their long-awaited debut album "Cadair Idris" on cool London jazz label New Soil (home of Theon Cross, Binker Golding, Matters Unknown, Ill Considered). Tonight, it's their home city launch party.
Support comes from a familiar face on Leeds' jazz and folks scenes - singer and harpist Georgie Buchanan.
Inspired by voyages to the Outer Hebrides, tales of ancient Celtic Goddesses and great folk singers from Peggy Seeger to Joni Mitchell, Georgie Buchanan is a unique singer and harpist on the contemporary folk scene.
Hailing from the North Shore Mountains of Canada and the Chiltern Hills, Georgie has always felt most at home creating music in the rich landscapes of the natural world. Since immersing herself in the folk world she’s performed with Show of Hands on the main stage of Sidmouth Folk Festival, been selected for Sound and Music’s highly competitive New Voices Programme and had one of her original songs ‘Love is a Rocking Wave’ played on The Nest Collective’s ‘Singing with Nightingales, Homecoming Broadcast’ hosted by Sam Lee. Georgie was most recently selected to take part in the English Folk Expo’s Artist Mentoring Programme and has performed at Focus Wales 2022 and Cambridge Folk Festival 2022 and 2023. She has supported critically acclaimed folk acts Ye Vagabonds, Katherine Priddy and John Francis Flynn. Georgie toured the UK in April 2023 with sell out shows in Leeds, Bristol, Sheffield and London.
With her debut album ‘Wise as a Fool’ Georgie crafts haunting musical landscapes of acapella harmonies and shimmering instrumentals. Interweaving traditional melodies with original compositions, songs and stories, Georgie’s music speaks of a heartfelt connection with the natural world and charts a personal story of recovery that is relatable at its core.
