About this Event
Overview:
In this course, spread-out over 8 weekly 2-hour sessions, we will explore the nature of reality through the practice of insight meditation. By bringing our unchallenged beliefs and patterns into the light of awareness, we can see how our rigid ideas often blind us to the richness of the truth. The wisdom that arises through insight meditation allows us to see our own experiences clearly. This leads to a sense of freedom, well-being, and confidence that is rooted in awareness itself, and available to us in each and every moment.
In the Joy of Living level three, Mingyur Rinpoche offers guidance on the practice of insight meditation, a profound form of meditation that uproots the causes of anxiety and suffering.
"We grasp onto the manifestation of whatever we are experiencing in our life, making our view very small, limited, and partial. If there is not impartiality, it becomes partial, divided into subject and object, divisions, and “boxes.” We create our own “boxes.” Actually, the “boxes” do not exist — it is just an illusion, but we do not know that. We will go through this in level three by practicing step-by-step, to see how to unbind and liberate ourselves from those boxes." ~ YMR
In this level, you will learn:
- How to use insight meditation to break through the distorted ideas that create confusion and suffering
- How to see beyond superficial thoughts and emotions to the basic goodness that lies within
- How our rigid beliefs about ourselves and the world around us keep us locked in a cycle of dissatisfaction and anxiety
- How to see things as they actually are, rather than the mistaken version of reality that we project onto the world
Each session includes experiential video teachings by Mingyur Rinpoche, as well as guided meditations and moderated discussions with Tergar guides.

Meet the guides:
Anya Adair
Anya Adair grew up at Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre, which was founded in Scotland in 1967 by Akong Rinpoche. She was fortunate to meet many great meditation masters. She met Mingyur Rinpoche while visiting Palpung Sherab Ling in India in 2000 and became his student in 2003 when he began teaching Mahamudra in the United Kingdom. In 2017 she co-founded the Tergar Edinburgh practice group. Anya works as a Transplant and Liver/Pancreas Surgeon in Edinburgh and has been involved in outreach healthcare in Tibet and Nepal since 2003.
Fionnuala Shenpen Daffy
Fionnuala Shenpen Daffy has studied and practiced Buddhism since meeting her main teachers Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Mingyur Rinpoche in Kathmandu in 1999. She has received teachings from many other Nyingma and Kagyu masters and completed a traditional four-year retreat under Pema Wangyal Rinpoche in France.
Fionnuala lived in Nepal for fifteen years. From 2003–2005 she lived at Osel Ling Monastery, continued her studies of Tibetan language and Buddhist philosophy, and assisted the Gompa Manager Lama Tashi. She accompanied Tsoknyi Rinpoche on the trip to Nangchen Tibet that resulted in the documentary Blessings. From 2013–2020, at Tsoknyi Rinpoche’s request, she set up and ran a school at Tsoknyi Gechak Ling, Kathmandu. Keeping Buddhist ethics at the core she incorporated learner-centered teaching methods to create a high-quality educational experience for young nuns. In 2016 Fionnuala started a Tergar group in Boudha, Kathmandu, with friends, and she is now starting groups at home in Ireland.
Fionnuala lives in Mountshannon on the banks of Lough Derg and enjoys swimming, kayaking, and growing vegetables in the community garden.
