About this Event
AV CLUB is an ongoing program of curated 16mm short film screenings designed to provoke discussion, create awareness of unique library resources held by the Special Collections Division of the Miami-Dade Public Library System and generate enthusiasm for learning and research. Tonight: a lineup of films inspired by The Barnacle, the 19th-century home of Ralph Munroe and the oldest house in Miami-Dade County still standing in its original location.
We watch a selection of five short films, with the highlight being:
CALLING MIAMI HOME, 1984; 23 MIN.
Directed by Mel Kiser.
Some long-time Miami residents reflect on the impact of uncontrolled development in South Florida. Not only can the natural environment be ruined, but continual redevelopment prevents the permanence necessary to cultivate a sense of place. Those interviewed are: Al Rantel, Art Simon, Marjory Stoneman Souglas, Sgt. Lee Haddon, Beth Dunlop, and Arva Moore Parks.
Vincent Nastasi, museum registrar at The Barnacle Historic State Park, will offer a guided tour of the library exhibit space and give unique insights into the collection.
For this outdoor event, attendees are welcome to bring picnics, lawn seating or blankets.
Doors will open at 6pm; films will start at 7pm.
Parking is available across Main Highway in the Playhouse Lot.
