Asuka Hisa is an independent curator; consultant for arts in the community; and artist. From 1998 to 2025 she was Director of Learning and Engagement at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA), where she curated and produced programs for museum and community audiences with a focus on artists and social action. A 2024 Smithsonian Fellow in Museum Practice, she is a lecturer and adjunct faculty member at UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture, Occidental College, and Otis College of Art and Design, leading courses on learning and engagement in contemporary art museums. Currently a board member of Automata—an organization devoted to experimental puppetry, theater, and film—and an advisory board member for Crayon Collection, she was the lead curator of the public art triennial CURRENT: LA FOOD in 2019 created throughout Los Angeles’s 15 Council Districts; Board President of the Museum Educators of Southern California from 2009 to 2011; and served on the Santa Monica Arts Commission from 2007 to 2011.
