Autism training for qualified children and family social workers who do not work in specialist Learning and Disability teams
About this Event

Outline:

The Teaching Partnership recently secured government funding to develop Autism training for qualified children and family social workers who do not work in specialist Learning and Disability teams. This is to ensure an equitable level of basic training to support multi-disciplinary working and improved outcomes for children, families and young people directly affected by autism. Two Pilot cohorts of this training have been delivered and now we are rolling this offer out more widely to all qualified children and family social workers who do not work in specialist Learning and Disability teams.

This training has been developed by a team of experts who have substantial experience in this field; the Teaching Partnership Practice Consultant Sharon Evans, who has over 21 years experience in children and families social work, including 10 years working with children with disabilities, and Angela Firth, a specialist learning disabilities social worker with 40 years experience including managing a children with disabilities service. This training has also been co-developed in consultation with People of Lived Experience and experienced specialist learning & disability social workers from across the Teaching Partnership.

This training will help social workers to develop their understanding of children and young people with autism and successfully work to support them and their families. It will also provide:

  • An opportunity to share your experience of working with families where you suspect a child has autism, or there has been a diagnosis
  • An opportunity to discuss and reflect on up to date research in this field, especially in relation to the under diagnosis of girls with autism and the impact this has
  • An opportunity to understand the impact on mental health of people with lived experience who have autism
  • The training will ensure delegates gain a deeper understanding of communication with people with autism and the impact on all aspects of the social world
  • Experiences of a young person with autism and a parent of autism as a key part of the training
  • A reflective discussion about safeguarding practice when working with autistic children, young people and/or parents which give the best outcomes
