Curt Meine will be in town to tell us about the life-long legacy of the late Paul Johnson, based on the book of Johnson's writing edited by Meine: "We Can Do Better: Collected Writings on Land, Conservation, and Public Policy."Johnson was a northeast Iowa farmer who became an Iowa state representative (author of the state Groundwater Protection Act), director of the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service and director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Following Paul's death in 2021, his former colleagues established the Paul Johnson Center for Land Stewardship Policy.
Curt is a conservation biologist, environmental historian, and writer based in Sauk County, Wisconsin. He serves as Senior Fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation and the Center for Humans and Nature.
He is a research associate with the International Crane Foundation and adjunct associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Across his career, Curt has worked with a wide array of organizations at the intersection of biodiversity conservation, agriculture, ecological restoration, water, climate change, environmental justice, and community resilience. Meine has authored several other books, including the award-winning biography Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work, The Driftless Reader.
