In The Price of Nice, Barger challenges the familiar idea that “it costs nothing to be nice,” arguing instead that prioritizing comfort and pleasantness often comes at a high cost. Through real-world examples and behavioral insights, she explores how niceness can suppress truth, sustain inequity, and stall meaningful progress in workplaces and communities. The book offers four practical, actionable steps for replacing performative politeness with principled courage.

During the event, Barger will discuss the ideas behind the book, share examples from her professional experience, and invite attendees into a thoughtful conversation about trust, accountability, and change. The evening will include a talk, audience Q&A, and book signing.

Amira Barger is a Benicia resident and a nationally recognized voice on trust, behavioral communications, and DEI. She serves as Executive Vice President and Head of DEI Advisory at Edelman and is a regular contributor to MSNBC and Fast Company. In addition, she teaches marketing, communications, and change-management at California State University, East Bay and the University of California, San Francisco. She is known for her sharp insight, accessible delivery, and ability to translate complex ideas into practical action.
