After 30 years in the wine business, Napa resident and longtime winery executive Jim Silver wrote a book about the wine market at the height of its recent tumultuous period to try to explain why we’re where we are, and what we should be doing about it. It’s an academic, how-to book that also reads like a love letter to the wine business. There’s something useful for anyone in our trade, whether they are the owner, the DTC manager, the National sales manager, or anyone else on the team. Conversational and a little cheeky, it’s a deep dive for winery professionals.

James ‘Jim’ Silver is a 30-plus-year veteran of the wine industry, having managed wineries and vineyards in New York and Northern California. Originally from Philadelphia, Jim has worked with Rémy Martin, Hess Collection, Martinelli, Alejandro Bulgheroni, and Bonny Doon Vineyard and was once the sommelier for the Four Seasons Hotel Group. He has designed and built retail wine shops, restaurants, and wine bars; created brands of wine, cider, and brandy; imported French, Australian, and Argentine wines; been a trade liaison to China; and exported American wines to two dozen countries. Jim and his wife, Claire, live in Napa Valley with their three children.
