The Reuters report from Moscow on the morning of Saturday, 3 August 1974 sent shockwaves through the Baltic community in Australia. The Australian Government, led by Gough Whitlam, had decided to grant de jure recognition to the incorporation of the Baltic States into the Soviet Union.Had the Baltic communities in Australia not succeeded in overturning this deeply unjust decision, the path to renewed Baltic independence in 1989–1991 would have been far more difficult.
