About this Event
Chapter Chasers Book Club is designed for emerging readers (ages 6-9) who are chasing the thrill of reading their first chapter books! We encourage both independent reading and family read-alouds for these selections, with the goal of getting kids excited about reading and fostering connections with a community of readers. Our 20-minute book discussion is followed by a themed read aloud and craft or game.
Our August discussion will center on Margi Preus’ new illustrated novel, THE SHREW DETECTIVE: THE CASE OF THE PILFERED PEARLS, where Wind in the Willows meets Enola Holmes! We intentionally chose an end-of-summer selection that skews a tad older (ages 7-10) in order to help combat the “summer slide” and take advantage of more reading opportunities during the summer months.
Parents are welcome to stay on the Junior side and participate or browse the adult side, but they must remain on-site.
Mention the book club at the shop or order online and note “book club” to get 10% off!
By attending any and all Old Town Books events you are agreeing to our code of conduct.
About The Book
Mystery: Something that is difficult or impossible to understand. With a curious mind and a vast vocabulary (thanks to her wallpaper—pages of a discarded human dictionary), tiny Minerva Shrew would love nothing more than to solve the Big Mysteries of Life and the Universe. Instead, in The Case of the Pilfered Pearls, she’s called upon to help her cousin Tenacity solve a mystery in the most dangerous of places: a human house. When a string of pearls goes missing, the human owner is sure a “dreadful rodent” has pilfered them—and now the lives of all Minerva’s friends are at risk! Will Minerva find the true culprit before the exterminators arrive?
With wit and warmth, Margi Preus creates a charming woodland world filled with creatures both whimsical and nefarious (neh-FARE-ee-us: wicked or criminal), along with suspense, intrigue, and, thanks to Minerva’s metabolism, plenty of snacks.
