THE PLAY
“The Victorian literary world is a boys' club, and the Brontë sisters must fight for their place at the table - and not just with the establishment. Buckle up: Charlotte has some confessions to make about why she has literary icon status, while Anne is remembered as the 'other' other Brontë...
This wild, irreverent, funny play takes the literary legends off their pedestals and shows us three very real women: brilliant sisters who love fiercely, but aren't above a bit of sibling rivalry as they strive for recognition and legacy.”
The play had a very successful run at the National Theatre in 2024. It’s a pacy, energetic, funny, and occasionally very moving story, and offers some fantastic acting opportunities.
THE PRODUCTION
Underdog is, of course, about famous historical characters, and their struggle to overcome the restrictions of patriarchal Victorian society. But the language and characterisation of the sisters is very modern (and occasionally pretty sweary!). Charlotte is a character out of time, reflecting on her life with her sisters. The action moves seamlessly between times and places. So the set and costumes will give an impression of the period, rather than aiming for crinolines and chaise longues.
CASTING
The Brontë Sisters:
Charlotte, Emily, Anne
All three are 20s-30s, F.
Please note: Charlotte drives the action throughout the play – she is almost never off stage. It’s an absolutely fantastic role, but the rehearsal schedule will be unavoidably demanding – if you have a lot of unavailability during the rehearsal period, it would be best to audition for another part.
Ensemble:
The ensemble (between 5 and 7 people, any age, any gender) take on every other part in the Bronte’s story – Branwell Brontë, Thackeray, Mrs Gaskell, critics, gentry, servants – even a ghastly little nine year old kid called Cunliffe who pulls the wings off birds! The ensemble will be kept very busy with different characters, as well as some physical theatre to create a sense of different locations. It should be a lot of fun to work on!
