Jo’s running from her husband, Yasmin’s hitchhiking towards true love, Frank’s longing for escape, Michael’s grieving for his dead son, Andy and Carla are grappling with screaming kids and a dodgy car...
6 characters, 5 stories.
Disparate lives that collide and connect on the open road.
For some a road leading away from broken hearts and broken dreams, for others a road leading toward exciting new ones.
The same road.
The Sweet Road.
Auditions - Saturday 17th Feb 10.30am – 12.00pm or 1.00pm – 2.30pm
Sunday 18th Feb 11.00am – 1.30pm
Call backs – Tuesday 20th Feb.
Read Through – Sunday 25th Feb.
Rehearsals – Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Sunday daytime. May change due to cast availability. Beginning Tuesday 27th Feb.
No rehearsal Sunday 3rd March (Long weekend)
No rehearsals Sunday 31st March (Easter four day weekend)
No rehearsals April 6th – 13th (middle weekend and week school holidays)

Sweet Road is a series of scenes, some quite short. There are 19 + scenes in Act One, and 22+ scenes in Act Two. Therefore, it is essential that the 6 main characters can commit to all rehearsals. The minor roles will not be required at all rehearsals until after bump in.
Season - May 10, 11, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 @ 7.30pm
Sunday May 12 @ 5pm (Mother’s Day)
Sunday May 19 @ 5pm.
A community theatre production therefore unpaid and membership of the club required after accepting a part.
Characters: Ideally, all characters will be played with an Australian accent. Jo, Frank, Carla, and Andy must sound Australian, but there is the possibility of Michael and Yasmin not being Australian if necessary.
Character descriptions taken from the script stage directions upon first entry on stage.
*Michael and Frank do not have these descriptions, so I have written a few things.
Ages are vaguely flexible and are stage playing age not actual age.
JO, late 30s
Energetic, anxious, and forthright, bullying herself into sounding bouyant.
ANDY, early 30s
Hyperactive, motor-mouthed, wildly optimistic, his limbs flying around with jerky enthusiasm like a little kid.
CARLA, early 30s
Worn out but sturdy, earthy, quick- tempered, with dark and distrustful expectations of the world.
MICHAEL, 30s
*Seeking solitude. Lost and grieving.
YASMIN, 19
Glowing, euphoric, expansive.
FRANK, late 60s
*trying to carry on after the loss of his wife. Down to earth.
The following roles to be covered by backstage crew and may be doubled.
CURTIS , MECHANIC, POLICEWOMAN and MOTEL RECEPTIONIST
Auditions:
Auditions will be in groups, with everyone (maximum 10 people) in the room together.
1. Each auditionee will deliver their monologue. Please note some of these monologues are conversations between two or more characters in the script that have been edited to read as a monologue. Accents appreciated. You don’t need to learn this monologue, but please be familiar with it, and have made choices about your interpretation and delivery of it.
2. Some improvisations speaking to a dog who is never seen. Most of the characters see and interact with Browndog.
3. If auditioning for Carla or Andy, there will also be some improvisations with your two children, also never seen.
4. Some scene work with others, provided prior to audition.
Email director, Vanessa Jensen, [email protected] to book an audition.
· Audition extracts will be sent out once you have booked into one of the three sessions.
· A photo and a very brief acting history with your email will be appreciated but is by no means essential.
