OVERVIEW
Sister Anzac tells the story of a matron with three nurses experiencing war for the first time. They travel to Gallipoli on board the NZ hospital ship Maheno. Later they go to France. One thing is certain, only they, like the men, will ever understand what happened to the Anzacs.
There is a local connection - the Matron on the Maheno was from Taranaki and also worked as a nurse in Hawera.
By arrangement with Playmarket, the play written by Geoff Allen, is to be directed by Clive Cullen
CAST
Matron Alice Corkindale - Stage age 35 – 50 years
Stern and sensible nursing veteran of the previous war but caring leader of her nurses. She is a hard Matron with the heart of gold, compelling, confident, proud, and brave.
Red Cross Trainee V.A.D. Elsie Livesey – Stage age 20 – 30 years. Naïve and posh, totally out of her comfort zone and has the most trouble adjusting to the horrors of injury, death and filth. Besotted fiancée to Harry
Sister Maggie Haynes – Stage age 25 – 35yrsBrash, confident, hard-as-nails Aussie larrikin, who becomes sensitive, all the while suppressing concern for a brother, missing in action, through her jokes and teasing.
Hilda O’Neill – Stage age 25 – 35 years. Quiet, mystical one who becomes strong. Continually cringing with prudish aversion to Maggie’s crass sense of humour.
Sgt. Harry Young – Stage age 20 – 30yrsEqually heroic and pathetic as a young wounded Sergeant. Tough yet sweet. Elsie’s fiancée
Col. Shelby Carter (C.M.O. Maheno) – Stage age 40+ years. Stiff-upper-lipped chief surgeon, belligerent and stickler to the rules Vocally disapproves of the women even being there
