Play Description: Gladys has run an art gallery in a Greenwich Village hotel for many years, but now the hotel owner wants to replace it with a trendy coffee shop. As they try to help her hold on to her independence, Gladys’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandson become worried about her increasingly erratic behavior. Inspired by Lonergan’s own grandmother’s battle with Alzheimer’s, THE WAVERLY GALLERY is an ode to an extraordinary woman and the humor and strength of a family in crisis.
Roles available:
GLADYS GREEN, 70s/80s: A former lawyer and Greenwich Village activist who runs a small art gallery. She has trouble hearing and is gradually losing her memory.
DANIEL GREEN, late 20s/30s: Gladys’s grandson. A speechwriter. The narrator of the play who is looking back on his memories of events that happened in his 20s.
ELLEN FINE, 40s/50s: Gladys’s daughter. A psychiatrist.
HOWARD FINE, 40s/50s: Ellen’s husband and Daniel’s stepfather. A psychiatrist.
DON BOWMAN, 30s: A painter from Lynn, Massachusetts.
