for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enufBy Ntozake Shange
Co-Directed by Reggie Guyton & Brianna Gude-Price
Choreographed by Mariah L. Brooks
Springfield Theatre Centre invites Women of Color to audition for an extraordinary and powerful theatrical experience: for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf, the groundbreaking 1976 choreopoem by Ntozake Shange.
This evocative work blends poetry, music, and movement into a form Shange herself coined as a choreopoem—a visceral storytelling style that mirrors the rhythms, language, and emotional truth of real women’s voices. The piece is composed of 20 interconnected poems that explore love, joy, pain, resilience, loss, and ultimately, sisterhood and empowerment.
Traditionally performed by seven nameless African-American women known only by colors—Lady in Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Brown, and Purple—this STC production will expand to a cast of 14 Women of Color, representing multiple generations:
7 Women of Color ages 18–30
7 Women of Color ages 40+
Together, the cast will give voice to stories reflecting the lived experiences of Black women navigating a racist and sexist society, touching on difficult but meaningful subjects including rape, abandonment, abortion, domestic violence, and healing. This production is rooted in care, intention, and respect, and will center trust, community, and courageous storytelling.
