Colors of Sound invites you to experience chamber music’s emotional power up close. The program opens with Philip Wharton’s Hussite Fantasy, a vivid work inspired by a legendary Czech hymn said to have turned armies to flight. Shimmering textures give way to bold rhythms—including a wild furiant and a quasi-medieval finale—imbued with Wharton’s personal connection to the region where Dvořák once summered.
Haydn’s String Quartet No. 4 in D major follows, full of charm, elegance, and playful wit from the master of the classical quartet. The evening then closes with the glowing warmth of Schubert’s Quintet in C Major, written for two violins, viola, and two cellos—a combination that gives this beloved work its distinctive depth and richness.
The ensemble brings together musicians whose artistry is matched by their rich experiences both near and far. Violinist Quinn Price, a prize-winning performer originally from Ellensburg, has appeared with orchestras from Cleveland to Tacoma and now serves as principal second with Northwest Sinfonietta. Violinist Annika Kounts has played with renowned ensembles across Germany and Europe before returning to Seattle, where she performs with Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra. Violist Sue Jane Bryant, a dedicated educator from Bainbridge Island, shares her love of music through both teaching and performance. Cellist Olga Ruvinov offers deeply sensitive interpretations shaped by her extensive chamber and orchestral work, while cellist Brian Wharton, rooted in Auburn’s own community, brings a powerful and expressive voice to the group. Together, these musicians create an evening where history, connection, and the colors of sound resonate in harmony.
