About this Event
Northwestern graduate students and faculty are invited to join us for the final installment of our 2025–26 graduate programming series: a mini-documentary screening and discussion featuring Craig Stevens, Anthropology PhD candidate and Buffett Dissertation Fellow. Produced by the Roberta Buffett Institute, the mini-documentary will showcase Stevens' cutting-edge research and methodology.
Stevens’ work seeks to express anthropological and archaeological data through creative processes and immersive experiences. Through 3D digitization and innovative curatorial strategies, Stevens seeks to expose broad and diverse audiences to African and African Diasporic material culture. His research leverages technologies including virtual reality and photogrammetry to allow African communities to meaningfully contribute to the interpretation and curation of their globally dispersed artifacts and cultural objects.
After the 15-minute screening and an audience Q&A, join us for a reception to celebrate the close of the academic year and learn more about the research and opportunities that the Institute’s graduate student funding can support.
About the Speaker
Craig Stevens is completing his doctoral research in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University. His dissertation investigates the placemaking strategies of nineteenth-century Black American and Caribbean Back-to-Africa settlers and their descendants in Liberia.
Stevens builds 3D, XR, and digital heritage platforms that connect archaeology, museums, and community knowledge to make African and African diasporic heritage collections more accessible and collaborative. He recently developed and curated the Augmented Curiosities exhibition for the Herskovits Library of African Studies, which leverages augmented and virtual reality technologies to provide intimate engagement with African object collections.
Stevens is a 2025–26 Buffett Dissertation Fellow. In 2018, he was awarded a Marshall Scholarship and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
