Delighted to welcome Liz Hanks to our monthly Attikk Sessions for an intimate night of music.Liz Hanks is a Sheffield-based cellist, composer, and collaborator with a rich and varied career. A longtime cellist for Richard Hawley, Thea Gilmore, and Martin Simpson, her work has been shaped by a diverse range of influences. She has recorded and toured with an array of artists, including Liam Gallagher, Pulp, Smokey Robinson, Cara Dillon, Paul Heaton, and Real World Records sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun.
Her music reflects the breadth of her experience, drawing from minimalism, folk, Indian classical music, and improvisation. Her debut album, Land, is inspired by the natural and local history of her Sheffield neighborhood Meersbrook, blending cello with field recordings to evoke the forgotten landscapes of the area. The album has received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 3, featured as the soundtrack to a BBC Radio 4 drama, and earned high praise—Elizabeth Alker called it "stunning," Mark Radcliffe described it as "really intriguing," and Folk Radio UK hailed it as "an immersive album of depth and subtlety."
Beyond the album, Land has been reimagined as an interactive audio walk in the places that shaped it and has been remixed by artists including Jason Singh, Richard Norris, Haiku Salut, and Leafcutter John. Liz brings the project to life in live performances, weaving together cello, looped field recordings, and storytelling to transport audiences into the lost landscapes that inspired her work.
