We are hosting Athena Najat this October for a weekend intensive in Greek belly dance. About Athena:
Athena Najat was born in the U.S.A of Greek heritage. For more than 20 years, she has pursued her dance dreams, made them her full-time career, and with dedication, they have taken her dancing all over the world.
She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts and Masters of Arts from NYU with her studies focusing on Dance Ethnography (culture & dance).
Living for nearly a decade in Athens, Greece, she co-organized an annual international dance festival and is also a founding member of Kazafy Troupe Greece. Her dance work has been presented at several World Congresses on Dance Research at CID-UNESCO.
Athena performed on-contract in several countries, working with one of the most reputable entertainment agencies in the Middle East, (Lebanon, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain). Most recently, she settled in Istanbul, Türkiye performing regularly on the most reputable stages in the tourism sector.
Athena is a popular workshop instructor and competition judge at international Belly Dance festivals.
Athena’s lifelong background in classical and theatrical dance blend with her deep interest in arts research and cultural traditions, making her classes unique, exciting, and informative.
Athena is currently based in the heart of the Aegean, splitting her time between Athens, Istanbul, and the Turquoise coast of Anatolia. Athena now offers dance classes online and enjoys traveling for workshops, festivals, and intensives to share her knowledge, experience and love of dance with dancers around the globe.

1. Greek Tsifteteli
Greek belly dance: From Traditional to Modern
When: Friday October 10, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Description:
Add fluidity, effortlessness and expression to your dance, with a bit of Greek soul!
From its important cultural roots in Anatolia, evolving in the Rembetiko clubs of Athens, all the way to modern day celebrations and festivals around the globe, Greeks have a unique dance which has influenced our global belly dance styles and nightlife around the world! Tsiftetelli is about empowerment, love, life and the joy and fun of freedom.
2. Turkish Roman Havasi (Feeling natural in the 9/8 rhythm)
When: Saturday October 11, 1:30 – 3:30 pm
Description:
Two versions of Romani dance will be explored in this workshop with emphasis on music and rhythm of the un-even and often challenging 9/8. We will begin with Roman basic steps, learning the dance as it is performed in a social setting. We will also explore more theatrical stylizations, often incorporated by professional entertainers on the stage, and blending with other foundations of dance performance.
3. Contemporary Greek Tsifteteli Belly Dance
“You want Bouzoukia? Let’s Go!”
When: Saturday October 11, 3:45 – 5:45 pm
Description:
Let loose and immerse yourself in the modern Greek culture of celebration, enjoyment, and have fun! This class will bring the Greek nightclub into the studio for us to relax, but also learn the nuances of the Greek belly dance style (tsifteteli) as it evolved and is seen today!
