About this Event
Join us at 42 Berlin for an inspiring 45-minute talk followed by Q&A with Dr. Amelie Schoenenwald, a member of the European Space Agency (ESA) Astronaut Reserve.
Amelie will share her personal journey, insights from training at ESA’s European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, and how VR simulations, telemetry, and satellite technologies are reshaping modern space missions.
About the speaker
Dr. Amelie Schoenenwald was selected in 2022 for the European Space Agency Astronaut Reserve from a pool of more than 22,500 applicants and began her rigorous Astronaut Reserve Training at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in October 2024. A biotechnologist and biochemist by training, she holds a PhD in integrative structural biology from the Medical University of Vienna and earned multiple degrees at the Technical University of Munich. Her professional background spans biotech start-ups and healthcare strategy roles, and in recognition of her contributions to the space community she was named a 2025 Karman Fellow.
What you’ll hear about
- Training for space, from the inside: What the ESA Astronaut Reserve Training actually entails (systems, robotics, survival/underwater work, team dynamics) and how it prepares candidates for future missions.
- VR & simulation: How immersive simulation supports procedure rehearsal, crew coordination, and decision-making under pressure.
- Telemetry & satellite ops: A practical look at how telemetry, tracking, and command inform mission health and navigation—and why ground segment skills matter even to crew.
- Careers across space & biotech: Translating lab skills to mission operations, and the soft skills (leadership, resilience, teamwork) that spaceflight demands.
Who should attend?
Students, engineers, makers, and anyone curious about how people actually train for space, from the science to the systems. Especially those interested in the intersection of space exploration and technology, and how innovation on Earth shapes missions beyond it.
