About this Event
Business 101 is a practical introductory workshop for creative business owners and people who are thinking about starting a creative business. This session will walk through the basic tools, decisions, and systems that can help you start with more clarity and confidence.
This workshop is designed for artists, designers, makers, performers, writers, creative freelancers, and anyone building a business around their creative work.
In this session, we’ll cover all the basics you need to get started, including:
- The basic setup you need to start taking on paid work, including email, invoices, records, payment systems, and simple business materials.
- Common business structure options, including sole proprietorship, partnership, and incorporation, and when each one might be worth considering.
- When to think about registering a business name or corporation number.
- Basic financial considerations, including tracking income and expenses, setting up invoice templates, and understanding when tax registration may become relevant.
- GST, PST, and tax questions at a beginner level, including what to start paying attention to as your business grows.
- The difference between a minimum viable business setup and the next layer of systems that can help you look and operate more professionally.
By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer sense of what they need to get started, what decisions can wait, and what systems are worth putting in place early.
Format: 30-minute presentation, with time for questions and informal connection.
Who this is for: Creative business owners, freelancers, artists, makers, and anyone thinking about starting a creative business.
Please note: This is not a legal, accounting, or tax advice session. It is a practical starting point to help creative entrepreneurs understand the basics, ask better questions, and feel more prepared to take the next step.
