About SPARCS: Since February 2023, 3x3, in collaboration with The CUNYSchool of Public Health, has been working to develop and launch co-designed, park-based programming in four New York City parks. This initiative explores how parks can serve as catalysts for improving residents’ physical and mental well-being.
SPARCS Goals: At its core, SPARCS examines how community-led activations in neighborhood parks can influence health-related outcomes. The study focuses on mental health and well-being indicators— such as anxiety, stress, and loneliness—as well as social and physical well-being measures.
About Astoria Heights Active: Astoria Heights Active was created in response to community feedback highlighting the need for fitness-based activities and family oriented events. Community members expressed strong interest in sports programming as a means to foster a healthier and more active community, with youth particularly enthusiastic about soccer and basketball tournaments, as well as yoga, dance, and Zumba classes. Residents also noted that while the park was recently renovated to include a lot of fitness and sports-oriented spaces, many of these spaces continued to be underutilized by the community.
About Salsa in Queens: Since opening our doors in January 2017, Salsa In Queens has been more than just a dance studio—we’re a second home, a community, and a rhythm-filled escape from the everyday. What started with 12 classes and a handful of passionate students has grown into a movement, with 25 weekly classes and hundreds of dancers finding their groove with us every week.We believe dance is for everyone—easy to learn, ridiculously fun, and a powerful way to connect. Our mission? To be that “third space” where you can move freely, laugh loudly, and push your skills to new heights. We’ve spent years fine-tuning our program, listening to our students, and shaping an experience that’s as welcoming as it is transformative.
