Lecture abstract
Trapeze Artistry in Biomimetic Smart Gels
We show how lifelike attributes of self-organisation, self-healing and enzyme-like activity can be created in synthetic polymeric gels. We also show how managing the delicate balance of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity led to a new molecule with applications in diverse areas such as osteogenic differentiation of stem cells to novel elastic enteric materials to a triggerable loss circulation material for drilling fluids. The role of both serendipity and organised research in these findings will be highlighted.
