Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice is a 2025 South Korean black comedy thriller that reimagines Donald Westlake’s novel The Ax through a Korean social lens. After being laid off from a long-held job, family man You Man-su becomes consumed by desperation in a hyper-competitive job market, spurring a darkly comedic and increasingly violent plan to eliminate his professional rivals. The film combines Park’s formal precision with incisive commentary on economic insecurity, corporate life, and existential despair, anchored by Lee Byung-hun’s compelling lead turn.
The film premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival to critical acclaim, earned awards at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, and was South Korea’s official submission for Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards.
