You are invited to begin the season of Lent as we remember where we came from and where we will return to through the cross on our foreheads and the ashes that will make the mark.Jesus is very clear, do not practice your piety before others so that you are seen. Whether it is through almsgiving, prayer, fasting, or your generosity, you don’t need to brag to others about your practices of faith. Then why do we mark our foreheads with such visible symbols of our piety? Jesus isn’t urging us to keep our faith a secret. Quite the opposite. Our piety is not something to brag about or to be used as something that separates and segregates us from others. The practices of faith we do are for us, to remind ourselves who Jesus is, what he has done, and how that changes our lives forever. You don’t need to tell someone you are going to love them more, just do it!
