The ashes symbolize mortality, the weight of sin, and our call for repentance. They are a reminder of our need for reconciliation with God and the church. Through the ashes, we remember that life is a gift from Christ, and it is only through Him that we are made whole.
Ash Wednesday also mark the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, penitence, and spiritual preparation leading up to Easter.
