《Ash & Friends Quartet》 is an international ensemble of ‘Sappho amigos’ - musical collaborators with a current inclination to journey through a variety of jazz sub-genres such as latin, swing and cool jazz, as well as a chilled out treatment of some standard vocal songs. At times, the vibe can be reminiscent of an uncluttered ‘sound of the trio’ - but as a quartet this is bolstered by the presence of both piano and guitar in the mix, with the bow of the contra bass adding a different timbre from time to time.
All are seasoned musicians, drawing influences from a wide variety of artists - thus it would be unwise to list any predominant influences in their performance material. That said, echoes of Kenny Burrell, Bill Evans and Slam Stewart may be heard in the quartet's treatment of the original recordings such as Midnight Blue, Horace Silver etc., while some of the vocal numbers are a definite blend of 'the established trailblazers' with some time honoured classics.
