Co‑Creating the Sustainable Curriculum: Embedding ESD Competencies in Higher Education
Dr. Vasiliki Kioupi, University of Leeds
Abstract: In this seminar, Dr. Vasiliki Kioupi from the University of Leeds, will explore the evolving landscape of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in UK higher education and share how the University of Leeds is implementing a whole-institution strategy to embed sustainability into student education, experience, and opportunity.
Vasiliki will also present insights from her recent Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence (LITE) Accelerator Fellowship, conducted in collaboration with Clare Jackson from the University’s Sustainability Service. This research project focuses on enabling more inclusive and holistic ways of conceptualising, teaching, and evidencing student sustainability competencies. Grounded in participatory action research and design thinking, the project has co-created reflective tools and curriculum design approaches with students and staff. These prototypes have already been applied across taught modules, extracurricular initiatives, and work-based learning settings, enhancing students’ academic development, confidence, and employability.
Bio: Dr Vasiliki Kioupi is an Associate Professor in Sustainable Curriculum at the Sustainability Research Institute of the School of Earth and Environment and a member of the leadership team implementing the Sustainable Curriculum principle of the university’s Climate Plan. She holds a doctoral degree in Education for Sustainable Development from the Centre for Environmental Policy of Imperial College London, for which she received a prestigious President’s PhD Scholarship. Her research investigates sustainability transitions in Higher Education and the role of sustainability competences in empowering young people to act for the climate and sustainability. Recently, she has started researching the role of GenAI tools in sustainability education. She is also a Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence Fellow and the academic lead for the Social Justice Jam.
